(136.5 cm) Classification: Wood-Sculpture Credit Line: Purchase, Funds from various donors, Daniel and Marian Malcolm Gift, and Laura and James J. Ross Gift, 2006 Accession Number: 2006.447 Kuyu art stands out for its dynamic interplay between three-dimensional forms and abstracted representations of reality as well as its emphasis on a broad spectrum of vibrant colors. This exceptional piece, collected by Aristide Courteois, the colonial official, in French Equatorial Africa, has successfully preserved the rich hues of nature that were essential to its captivating visual impact. Its creator viewed the body as a canvas and skillfully arranged numerous graphic signs into an artistic whole that is both complex and harmonious. This masterpiece is distinctive for its subject's portrayal of superior vision and omnipresent power through the repetition of nearly identical faces surrounding the head. In traditional initiation ceremonies, related figures played key roles in conveying mysterious knowledge about secret forces and ancestral influences. Such elaborate and culturally significant works likely held crucial positions within their respective cultures, but very little information exists regarding this artistic tradition due to its historical isolation from outside observers.
