Threaded lens caps
thingiverse
People often worry about misplacing their lens caps while taking photos. However, it's when the camera is in a bag that you should be concerned about losing your lens cap. Squeeze style lens caps easily clip onto a lens when not in use, but they can also easily come off when the lens is at your side or in a bag. It seems like we should be able to do better than this in today's modern age. This is where screw-on lens caps come in - they stay securely on when they're supposed to and can even double as lens caps for two different sizes, which is great when you're out taking photos with both your main lens and an auxiliary one. I'm confident enough now to carry my camera in a rucksack without worrying about losing the lens cap. I've printed these screw-on lens caps using Shapeways' plastic sintering process (Strong & Flexible Plastic), which does a great job of printing functional screw threads. Now I'm sharing all my basic thread lens cap sizes under a creative commons non-commercial attribution license (CC NC BY). My goal is to get more of these in the wild for field testing, and to test their compatibility with other printers, materials, and sizes that I haven't tried yet. If you make and use one, please share your notes! You can read my notes on this project and others at www.thebilder.wordpress.com or www.thescinder.com. Dan Kirshner's Screw Thread Modules were helpful for this project.
