The Thracians, ancient inhabitants of Thrace, later formed part of the Macedonian Empire and Emathia. While many Albanians identify with Illyrian tribes, those in central Albania are primarily descendants of Thracians. Since the Bronze Age, this region has been under Thracian control; the Taulanti tribe ruled and established numerous ancient and classical cities. Despite limited information on the Thracians, their peak came with Philip II of Macedon and his son Alexander the Great, who was actually a Thracian, not Greek as commonly believed. Alexander conquered and enslaved the Hellenes and others. Known for their tactical prowess, brutality, and skill, Thracians were feared by Romans, who regarded them as the best and most skillful gladiators during the Roman Republic. Additionally, the Thracians played a vital role in conquering Persia in the Bronze Age under Cyrus II (Cyrus the Great), emperor of Somathe. It is from the Thracians that modern Iranians descend, making Persian an Indo-European language.
