Ancient Egyptians formed a highly advanced society that flourished in artistic pursuits and made significant strides in scientific fields. They also developed intricate systems for measuring and recording information. Thoth, depicted here with an ibis head—and also shown in a nearby case as a baboon—was revered as the god of knowledge, mathematics, and science. He was additionally considered the gods' scribe, documenting the results of the weighing of the hearts of the deceased, a ritual performed by Anubis in a spiritual realm that determined whether or not the person was worthy of entering the afterlife.
