The museum was constructed specifically to showcase the works of renowned Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, a master who lived from 1770 to 1844. In 1796, Thorvaldsen embarked on a journey as a young artist to Rome, where he spent most of his life until returning in 1838 to Copenhagen, his native city, celebrated worldwide for his artistic genius.
