In the summer of 2018, CyArk digitally charted the Thomas Jefferson Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Partnering with the National Park Service, CyArk employed terrestrial photogrammetry (Nikon D810 and Phase One Medium format camera) and laser scanning (Faro X330) to document the exterior of the monument from the ground up. As a precautionary measure, CyArk opted not to use drones to capture all aspects of the cultural heritage site, since airspace restrictions prevail in the nation's capital. To successfully capture aerial photographs of the monument, CyArk worked with the National Park Service's law enforcement helicopter to photograph the site from above. By obtaining baseline documentation of the monument, site managers can better understand the growth of biofilm on the monument's dome and develop effective conservation strategies. LiDAR and photogrammetric data are readily available for this project at openheritage3D.org, where users can explore and analyze the digital model in greater detail.
