Thomas Jefferson established the University of Virginia as a place where students could engage in intellectual pursuits and cultivate their minds. He designed the university's first buildings, which included the iconic Rotunda, to be functional and beautiful spaces that would inspire learning and curiosity. As a statesman and scientist, Jefferson believed that education should be focused on the practical application of knowledge, rather than mere book-learning. He wanted students at UVA to develop their critical thinking skills and learn how to approach problems in a logical and methodical way.
