Thomas Fairfax at The National Portrait Gallery, London

Thomas Fairfax stands out as one of the most accomplished Parliamentarian officers in history. After his victory at Marston Moor in 1644, he was appointed Lord General of the New Model Army. A string of decisive victories followed, starting with the battle of Naseby in 1645, which ultimately won the Civil War for the Parliamentarians. Fairfax's strong sense of justice made him wary of extremism and led him to refuse a role on the court that tried the King or to lead an army into Scotland in 1650. He withdrew from public life until 1660, when he joined forces with General Monck in his march to London to demand a free parliament and later traveled to the Hague to welcome Charles II back to power after his Restoration to the throne. A lead bust of Fairfax was crafted by an unknown artist around 1650 and is now on permanent display at the National Portrait Gallery.
