Oriel Ross grew up in Oxfordshire as the daughter of a clergyman, who shared his bohemian home with Jacob Epstein's eclectic household in Guildford Street, London, for several months during the mid-1920s. A talented actress by trade, Oriel had initially honed her craft at the prestigious Royal College of Music. Her impressive stage presence was showcased when she played Isolda in a 1938 television production of Tristan and Isolda, while also making her mark on Broadway in New York City. Additionally, Oriel was a valued member of the esteemed Old Vic Company.
