During the first half of my second year in GMP, I focused on a school project involving the adaptation of a professional 3D printer to open-source components. This entailed working on a lubrication pump/reservoir system during our free time for one month. Our task was to study the environmental impacts of an existing pump/reservoir and identify areas for improvement. We then designed a modified product, comparing it with the original. In summary, we replaced the stainless steel rectangular reservoir with a lighter plastic hemisphere, reduced components by utilizing a single electric motor for both mixing and injection, and implemented more efficient cylindrical metal pieces to minimize waste and energy consumption. Although these changes are speculative, they should result in a less impactful and cost-effective solution.
