Thin Grippers / Tweezers (Compliant Mechanism)
prusaprinters

Hello,

this is an early version of a compliant gripper which allows you to hold small objects that you can't reach using only your hands.

So far I made four versions:

Small rings (Ø20 & Ø14 mm):

Short version - its dimensions are approx. 3 (4.5) x 31 x 120 mm

Long version - its dimensions are approx. 3 (4.5) x 31 x 190 mm

Large rings (Ø25 & Ø17 mm):

Short version - its dimensions are approx. 3 (4.5) x 35 x 120 mm

Long version - its dimensions are approx. 3 (4.5) x 35 x 190 mm

If you want to see it in action, have a look at this cool video by RyanTheMast:

<oembed url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DIbmBBc4xpY"></oembed>

How do you use it?

Place your index finger and your middle finger at the sides of the gripper. Use your thumb to actuate the gripper by moving the ring at the top. If you push it towards the front the gripper will open, if you pull it in the opposite direction it closes.

It doesn't matter how many times you use the gripper, as the material is only ever deformed in the elastic region, it will always return to its original position. I also added a stop at the back so no matter how hard you press the ring down to open the gripper you won't break it.

The mechanism consists of a single component and can be printed in approx. 1 hour.

What should you know before printing this?

There are two connecting parts at the bottom of the gripper. Due to the thickness of only 3 mm there is not much space between the connecting part and the moving rod in the center. I designed this to the absolute limit my 3d printer can handle. This means that it could happen, that both parts melt together if you print it. If this happens use the tip of a ballpoint pen refill to push the center rod down on both sides of the connecting part. This should be enough to break it free. If this does not work let me know!! I will then increase the distance in the next version to make it easier to print.

The ring at the top has a diameter of approx. 19 mm. If your thumb is thicker and you need a larger version just let me know.

I hope you like it. If it does not work for you please leave a comment or shoot me a message instead of just posting a 1 star review, I'm sure there is no problem that can't be solved.
