I love sewing with thimbles that fit perfectly on my finger tip. Sewing thimbles come in handy, especially for frequent pin pricking - it's a habit worth getting into! You don't need to prick yourself all the time when you use a good quality thimble. A thimble is essentially a small honeycomb cap that fits snugly over the finger on which I hold my needle. For right-handed folks, it goes on their right hand index finger and left-handers put it on their left index finger. When shooting my thread with my fingers, the tip of the needle naturally finds its way into one of the thimble's many cavities. The fit of the thimble should be comfortable but firm. If I make it too tight, it won't slide easily; if it's loose, the thimble might slip off. There are many possibilities - decorative thimbles in various shapes or more practical ones that can protect fingers from those pesky sewing pins. The design parameters you need to consider include finger circumference, wall thickness, and overall height. Don't forget about the hole diameters and the distance between holes in a circular or vertical arrangement. Adding a rim or taking off the top part for creating an unconventional thimble vase or pot can also add some extra flair. Still struggling with your thimble project?
