They Live is an 1988 American science-fiction action horror movie written and directed by John Carpenter, based on the 1963 short story “Eight O’Clock in the Morning” by Ray Nelson, starring Roddy Piper, Keith David, and Meg Foster. The film follows a nameless drifter who discovers with special glasses that the ruling class are aliens hiding their appearance and controlling people to spend money, breed, and accept the status quo through subliminal messages in mass media. The movie started out with moderate success when it was first released, debuting at number one on the North American box office. At first, it received negative reviews criticizing its social commentary, writing, and acting. But like other John Carpenter movies, it later gained a cult following and is now widely recognized as an underrated work. The film has also become part of popular culture and notably had a lasting impact on street art, especially the work of Shepard Fairey.
