The renowned Scottish painter, archaeologist and dealer Gavin Hamilton (1723-1798) was a close friend of Canova's. Hamilton advised Canova to depict Theseus and the Minotaur after their fierce struggle. He suggested that Canova would receive even greater praise and critical acclaim if he created a static group rather than a violent one. The sculpture received widespread acclaim, establishing Canova as the leading European sculptor of his time. This object is part of "Scan The World", a non-profit initiative introduced by MyMiniFactory.
