In ancient Greece, thermopolium such as this one were a place where something hot was sold. Archaeologists and historians believe thermpolia were similar to modern day fast food outlets. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79 left large sections of Herculaneum well preserved for later excavation and study.
