Thermopilium at Herculaneum
sketchfab
The thermopolia were bustling public gathering places where people came to savor hot, savory dishes and refreshing drinks - a tradition that's still alive today in the form of Greek-style eateries. It was rare for anyone to skip lunch at home; instead, they'd head to one of these popular establishments, like the ones found along Pompeii's winding roads. Take a typical thermopolium as an example: one room opened directly onto the street, with a simple yet elegant counter made from bricks and topped with gleaming marble or terracotta slabs. Behind this sleek facade, rows of dolia jars were sunk into the countertop, filled to the brim with mouthwatering treats. Patrons could even grab a seat in the cozy back rooms to enjoy their meal in comfort. Archaeologists have unearthed many amphorae in these thermopolium backrooms, including one remarkable vessel adorned with an inscription penned by a skilled Herculaneum craftsman: "M. Livi Alcimi Herclani" - a testament to the rich history and culture of ancient Pompeii.
