This mask was unearthed west of the Stoa of Attalos in Athens, Greece. Carved into a dense slab of stone, the mask portrays the quintessential young woman or courtesan of New Comedy, characterized by her luscious tresses and decorative earrings. The New Comedy era marked the third and final phase of Ancient Greek Comedy, drawing parallels with situation comedy and comedy of manners. For the first time, love emerged as a dominant theme in dramatic works. The New Comedy offered a vivid representation of Athenian society during that period, highlighting its social norms and values without critique or commentary.
