This is a set of C source tools that generate captivating 3D models from images, revealing their content when illuminated from behind. The tool "lithophane" produces traditional lithophanes in STL format from ppm-formatted images (ImageMagick can convert images to this format from others). A different kind of 3D model, known as a lithocup, can be created with the "lithocup" tool, where an image is mapped onto a cylindrical surface. To illustrate this type of model, I have included an example of a "World Cup" cylindrical lithophane that shows a map of the earth when lit from the inside. May 10, 2014 update: The option to set margins has been added on lithocup to allow it to go beyond the boundaries of the image. I've also made adjustments so the natural orientation of the cylinder is with the textured side facing outward and can be changed to a smooth side with the "xflip" command. Another change is that the cylinder now stands upright compared to a flat XY plane. May 12, 2014 update: The ability to generate binary STL files using the options "-b" on lithocup and lithophane has been added. This results in significantly smaller STL files being created compared to ASCII ones. May 26, 2014 update: A new option, "-m," has been added to lithophane that lets you create a border around an image at the same thickness as its thickest part (default 3mm). December 30, 2014 update: Two more features have been incorporated into the C source tools. The first is the "chamfer" (-c) option on lithophane to soften the edges of an image when printing it out by giving it a slight chamfer to prevent its corners from lifting during printing.
