The grey wolf (Canis lupus), often simply known as the wolf, inhabits the vast expanses of Eurasia and North America's rugged wilderness regions. Weighing in at an impressive 40 kilograms for males and between 35.5-37.7 kg for females, this canine is undoubtedly the largest existing member of its family. What sets it apart from other Canis species are its considerable size and relatively less pointed facial features, particularly noticeable on its ears and muzzle. The wolf's winter coat is thick, long, and heavily matted with a predominantly grey color, although white, red, brown to black hues also appear with regularity. Mammal Species of the World (3rd ed., 2005) lists an astonishing 38 subspecies of C. lupus in its exhaustive registry. The wolf stands out as the most highly specialized member of the Canis genus when it comes to hunting large prey cooperatively, as demonstrated by its uniquely adapted physiology for tackling such massive game, its social and more gregarious nature, and its highly expressive communication style. Despite its unique specialization, however, the wolf is still closely enough related to smaller Canis species, like coyotes and golden jackals, that they can successfully interbreed with them. The grey wolf holds a distinctive place in its family as the sole member of the genus with a geographic range encompassing both Eurasia and North America. Wolf societies are structured around close-knit nuclear families consisting of an adult mated pair accompanied by their mature offspring. These family units roam the wild together, led by experienced pack leaders who teach younger wolves vital survival skills and social behavior. A predominantly carnivorous species, grey wolves primarily feed on large wild ungulates, though they will also consume smaller animals, livestock, carrion, and garbage in order to survive.
