The White House 3d model

The building was originally known by various names including the 'President's Palace', 'Presidential Mansion', and 'President's House'. The first recorded public reference to it as the 'White House' dates back to 1811. A popular myth claims that during its reconstruction, white paint was applied to conceal fire damage, giving the structure its distinctive color; however, this is unfounded since it had been painted white since its construction in 1798. In official contexts, the name 'Executive Mansion' was used until President Theodore Roosevelt formally established the name by having the term 'White House–Washington' engraved on stationery in 1901. The current letterhead wording and layout, 'The White House', with 'Washington' centered below, originated during Franklin Delano Roosevelt's administration. Although it wasn't built until after George Washington's presidency, some speculate that the name of the President's traditional home may have derived from Martha Custis Washington's home, the White House Plantation in New Kent County, Virginia, where the nation's first President and First Lady had courted in the mid-18th century.
