The Vow of Innocence (The Insensitive)

This plaster cast comes from a marble once housed at Palazzo Bagnara in Naples. Bartolini depicts Innocence as a young woman taking the vow of chastity: adorned with flower sacrifices, her expression remains impassive to avoid being overly pleasant, and she offers two turtledoves. The artwork demonstrates Bartolini's shift away from neoclassical culture's "Ideal Beauty" towards an emphasis on Natural Beauty, influenced by his study of fifteenth-century plastic art. Originally commissioned by Vincenzo Ruffo di Bagnara, a prince of Sant'Antimo, the marble was intended for Palazzo n Largo Mercantello, now Piazza Dante, in Naples, but has since been lost.
