This is a life-sized marble sculpture from 12th century depicting a pivotal moment in history. Mary's pregnancy with Jesus and Elizabeth's pregnancy with John the Baptist set off a chain reaction that would change the course of human events forever. Mary hastily left Nazareth after receiving news of her impending motherhood, traveling into the hill country to visit her cousin Elizabeth in a nearby city within Judah. Historians remain divided on the exact location of this fateful encounter, with some pointing to Hebron, south of Jerusalem, and others suggesting Ein Karem as the site where these two pivotal figures intersected. The arduous journey spanned approximately 100 miles, during which Elizabeth was already six months pregnant when Mary arrived. Joseph likely accompanied his expectant wife to Judah before returning to Nazareth, only to rejoin her three months later and escort her back home. The appearance of an angel, as described in Matthew 1:19-25, may have coincided with this visit, silencing Joseph's doubts about Mary's virginity once and for all. In Catholic tradition, this visit is seen as a divine intervention aimed at bestowing blessings on both Elizabeth and her unborn child. Miraculously, John leapt for joy while still in his mother's womb, symbolizing his recognition of Christ's presence and his own purification from original sin. Elizabeth also sensed the presence of Jesus, solidifying Mary's role as a mediator between God and humanity for the first time.
