The Virgin and Child

The Virgin and Child

myminifactory

This is a reproduction of Benedetto da Maiano's Virgin and Child, crafted around 1491-5. The original resides in The Strozzi Chapel at the Church of Santa Maria Novella, Florence. Created by Giovanni Franchi and Son in London (1866), this cast honors Renaissance images of the Virgin and Child that were celebrated in the 19th Century. These tender representations of a mother's love for her child inspired British artists with their delicate portrayals of family bonds. This reproduction replicates a relief commissioned by Filippo Strozzi, a wealthy Florentine banker, for his private chapel.
