In ancient Rome, priestesses revered as Vestal Virgins served Vesta, goddess of the hearth with fervent dedication. The well-being of the College of the Vestals was considered essential for Rome's survival and stability. They zealously tended the sacred fire that must not be extinguished under any circumstances. Exempt from marriage and childbearing responsibilities, the Vestals took a solemn vow of chastity to concentrate on mastering and accurately observing state rituals restricted to male priestly colleges.
