The Unicorn Unveiled, a striking installation by Scottish visionary Alice Martin, reimagines a modern sculpture atop Stirling Castle's majestic Great Hall for the HES conference Monuments in Monuments. At its core, this work symbolically delves into the concept of recreation, marrying past and present with unerring precision. Martin's vision is brought to life through a masterful reuse of a 3D model, imbuing it with historic etchings that pay homage to the castle's rich heritage. By building upon the past, Martin creates a poignant reflection on the enduring power of art and culture. Echoing the seven recreated tapestries of The Hunt of the Unicorn series, which adorn the castle walls, Martin's piece pays tribute to the medieval originals housed in the MET. To create a sense of continuity, she superimposes imagery from one of those iconic tapestries, The Unicorn in Captivity, licensed under CCO 1.0. As if time itself had worn away the sculpture, half of the figure is deliberately eroded, serving as a powerful reminder of the importance of conservation and memory. This thought-provoking installation serves as a poignant testament to the enduring legacy of art and culture.
