Hello, makers! First of all, I want to thank the team that put out this competition and all the hard work they have put into it. I'm always impressed by the creativity and hard work that MakerBot's Thingiverse brings to the 3D printing market. I'm a 15-year-old from the suburbs of Chicago, where I've been interested in 3D Printing and Design since I first heard about it when I was five years old. I purchased my first 3D printer (the MP Select Mini) last year, and since then all my free time has been gone! I spent countless hours calibrating, designing, and printing anything I could think of. Thingiverse was a godsend. With that printer, I learned the basics of 3D printing and earlier this year I purchased my second printer (the MP Select Maker V2). I have loved it - the bigger build volume gave me more to work with, and the possibilities grew. Soon after that, I started an Etsy shop and began my journey into CAD. When I first tried CAD, it had slow processing power, a terrible UI, and glitchy graphics. It was at this point that I was introduced to Onshape - I would highly recommend it! Onshape is what I used to create the models for this challenge. Throughout the last six months, I've watched countless videos and probably spent way too much time designing things on Onshape. My parents never see me anymore, haha! When I saw this challenge, I was super excited to start working on it right away because I love 3D design. I have also wanted to get a high-end drone for a while now, but I've been saving for college and a car - so a chance to win a drone is particularly desirable, especially if I can use CAD to do it! The Ultimate Teal Drone Mod Case After thinking about what I would want from a drone, I couldn't stop coming up with ideas of all the things to add to a great drone like Teal. After a bit of research into Teal, I quickly learned how modular this drone is - you can take off the legs, put in better batteries, and buy attachable parts as they come out. So I decided to go with a modular-designed top, after a few renderings, came up with the ultimate teal drone mod case...a top that allows for infinite possibilities. The way the top works is that it has three slots on it, allowing you to put mods on the front, middle, and back. The slots work by putting the small cylinder piece on the bottom of one of them mods into one of the big holes in the top piece of the drone. It must then be slid over to inside the smaller hole so it cannot move around. The friction hold will keep the mod in place while also allowing easy removal of the piece. This printable top allows for easy printing of mods, and instead of having to print the entire top for the drone every time you want to add something, now with my rendition, you can simply print the mod that you need and snap it right on to the drone and you're ready to go. The slots could also be added to the bottom of the drone so the mods could be used on the bottom as well. The ideas for the modification I created are below, with more to come. Any feedback would be great, and I would love to answer any questions you may have.
