The Ultimate Halo Warthog Pinewood Derby Car
thingiverse
My son and I like making Pinewood derby cars for Cub Scouts and going all out with creativity and problem-solving together, using tools to solve creative problems. We built Lightning McQueen, Mater and Francesco Bernoulli from the Cars movies previously. Lately, we've been playing Halo games and decided to build a Warthog this year. We made the Warthog's body out of wood by gluing on extra blocks for fenders after cutting them out with a scroll saw. I didn't take pictures before gluing or save templates. We used a belt sander, Dremel, and hand sanding to finish the wood shaping. Then, we designed accessories using Tinkercad where I taught him to design different parts. There were many rounds of designing, printing, and revising the design before attaching them to the Warthog. Many attachments involved drilling a 1/16 hole and inserting parts or gluing them with a glue gun. The turret was assembled by putting pins in the base and rocket pods with super glue. It's glued together and attached using pins and hot glue. We used a Coke bottle to make the windshield, which is stuck on with hot glue, and put Megablox Halo figures that we glued in place too. For racing, we added some weights on the back during weigh-ins. After 40 hours of work over several weeks, this Warthog came alive. Although he ranked in the middle pack, he got a trophy for Best Overall Design which was fantastic.
