The Uffizi Wrestlers at the Uffizi collection in Florence, Italy

The two robust youths engage in pankration, a form of wrestling akin to modern mixed martial arts. The two figures are locked in a cross-body ride, a move now commonly used in freestyle wrestling. The upper wrestler has his left leg entwined with his opponent's left leg, with his body positioned across the opponent's torso, lifting the opponent's right arm high into the air. In a well-known series of wrestling moves, the upper wrestler would next attempt to lift his opponent's arm above their head to execute a pinning move known as the Guillotine. Their muscular build is remarkably defined and exaggerated due to intense physical exertion. Neither of the two heads are original to the statue, although the lower figure's head is an older piece that rivals the sons in the Niobe Group for artistic merit. The heads were added after the sculpture was rediscovered. Although the original piece is located in Florence, numerous copies can be found worldwide, including one at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
