A close-up look at the uncovered fragment of the Tudor Floor, situated beneath the Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, is revealed with insightful commentary by Jane Sidell, a seasoned Inspector of Ancient Monuments at Historic England. Excavation work on the new visitor center below the Painted Hall led to the exciting discovery of two rooms within the walls of Greenwich Palace, including a floor made entirely of lead-glazed tiles. Strategically set back from the river, these rooms may have been part of the service range or even a friary. One of the rooms is clearly subterranean and features a series of unusual niches, which archaeologists believe could be 'bee boles' for keeping skeps (hive baskets) during the winter months when bee colonies hibernate.
