Human beings are constantly shaping their surroundings through the things we do. Everyday routines such as eating, sleeping, socializing, and playing have a profound impact on the design of objects that fill our lives. The connection between human behavior and object design is a complex one, influenced by local cultures around the world. The global design project "Things We Do" sets out to explore this intricate relationship in East Africa, where human civilization first took root. This collaborative effort brings together British design studio NEON and Kenyan furniture company 98 Crafted, both of which are passionate about understanding how design reflects and shapes local culture. Homogenization is a pressing concern for these designers, who believe that the globalization of cultures can lead to a loss of unique traditions and practices. To combat this trend, they will be employing the ancient art of storytelling as a means of discovery and translation. By co-designing objects with local artisans, "Things We Do" aims to preserve cultural heritage while also creating innovative designs that are both functional and beautiful. This project is set to debut at Design Week Addis Ababa from February 11-17, 2019, and will later be showcased at Nairobi Design Week from March 17-23, 2019.
