Eugène Brands (1913 - 2002) was a Dutch painter who played a significant role in the COBRA movement, an innovative European avant-garde group that thrived from 1948 to 1951. The name "COBRA" emerged in 1948 as a clever acronym created by Christian Dotremont using the initials of the members' hometowns: Copenhagen (Co), Brussels (Br), Amsterdam (A). In 1946, Eugène Brands participated in the groundbreaking group exhibition "Young Painters" at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, where his entire body of work was showcased and the COBRA movement began to take shape. He remained a core member for many years, contributing to the group's art magazine Reflex, which he helped establish. However, disagreements eventually led him to pursue his solo career. This piece embodies a distinctive style, characterized by its unique form and three-dimensional quality. The artist deliberately crafted it as a visual experiment with colors and shapes, pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.
