The Suffering 'Pleureuse' at The Louvre, Paris
cults3d
This majestic marble statue by Ignace Broche began taking shape in 1741 in Belfort and reached completion in 1749 in the City of Light, Paris, where it was rescued from an 18th century tomb. Typically, a "Pleureuse" is a beautiful work of art - either a statue or painting - depicting a sorrowful woman created to pay tribute to the deceased on their tomb or grave. This stunning "pleureuse" (or weeping woman) is a fragment salvaged from the tomb of Joseph Durey de Sauroy, a noble marqui of Terrail and illustrious Marshall of the Kings Army's and Camps. Following the turbulent first French revolution, the tomb was carefully re-located in 1778 to the Church of Théatins in Paris, where it now proudly resides in the permanent collection at The Louvre, Paris.
