The Stoning of Saint Stephen
myminifactory
This bronze work, situated in Valenciennes, vividly portrays the stoning of Saint-Étienne (Stephen). Conceived by French sculptor Robert Barillot (1921-2001), Saint Stephen was condemned for committing blasphemy against the Jewish Temple, and he met his demise through stoning around 36 AD. As the patron saint of deacons and stonemasons, Stephen's legacy endures. Barillot, a former city councilor in Valenciennes from 1989-1995, donated the original plaster version of this sculpture in 2000. It was cast and installed in October 2001, just steps away from the general hospital.
