The Hopeful Monument is a magnificent granite statue created by Lei Yixin, situated within the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington D.C., covering an expansive four acres of West Potomac Park land. Inspired by a powerful line from King's iconic "I Have A Dream" speech - "Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope" - the memorial design takes shape. The public was finally able to experience this tribute on August 22nd, 2011, after more than two decades of meticulous planning, funding, and construction. While it is not the first monument dedicated to an African American in Washington, D.C., King becomes the first African American honored with a memorial situated on or near the National Mall and only the fourth non-President to be immortalized in such a revered way.
