Konenkov graduated from Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture with a Large Silver Medal for his diploma work, The Stone Breaker, completed in 1897. Originally created in clay, this powerful study of a Russian road worker was cast in bronze and showcased at the 27th Exhibition of Association of Traveling Exhibitions in 1899. Later that year, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg.
