Lorado Taft, an American sculptor from 1860-1936, created 'The Solitude of the Soul' initially modeled in plaster in 1901 and later sculpted in marble in 1914. The work measures 231.1 cm high with a base of 129.5 x 105.4 cm (91 in.; base 51 x 41 1/2 in.). It is part of the Friends of American Art Collection under the number 1914.739 and falls under the category of American Art. The sculpture is housed in Gallery 161. Taft's work marked a shift from neoclassicism to naturalism, influenced by French training. His figures are partially freed from the marble, showcasing the mass and outline of the stone. 'The Solitude of the Soul' symbolizes the inherent unknown nature of individuals despite their circumstances. The sculpture is also featured in an article by Yasmine Afshar's 123D Catch.
