The so-called Bacchus-Hermaphroditus
myminifactory
This depiction shows Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and pleasure, as Hermaphroditus. In Greek mythology, Hermaphroditus was born to Aphrodite and Hermes, who was a remarkably handsome boy from birth. The water nymph Salmacis fell deeply in love with him and prayed to be united forever, so a god answered her prayer by merging their two forms into one and transforming them into an androgynous figure. His name is a combination of his parents' names, Hermes and Aphrodite, and he is often depicted as a female figure with male genitals. The head in this depiction is a Roman copy of an older Greek original and is attributed to Praxiteles, a renowned Attic sculptor from the 4th century BC. It belongs to the "turning satyr" type.
