Laurance MacDonald burst onto the scene in 1799, born in Perthshire and destined for greatness. He deftly migrated to Rome in the 1820s, rapidly establishing himself as a master sculptor of stunning portrait busts that captivated all who laid eyes on them. In 1822-23, he was at the forefront of the British Academy of Arts in Rome, shaping its very foundations and setting the tone for future generations. By 1827, MacDonald had seized the reins from Samuel Joseph as the leading sculptor within the Edinburgh Phrenological Society's esteemed ranks, guiding its development with unwavering influence. Today, the society's impressive collection resides safely within The Anatomical Museum's expert care. The iconic sculpture, an homage to Michelangelo's timeless masterpiece "David," vividly brings to life a young hero poised to unleash his sling and deliver the decisive blow against the formidable Goliath, as the world holds its collective breath in anticipation of the dramatic showdown.
