The Slave Girl

This life-sized statue brings to life a female slave, standing half nude with her hands in chains, as she stands strong against the weight of her bondage. The work is carved from white carrara marble, a testament to the artist's skill and craftsmanship, and proudly bears the signature and date J. A. Jerichau 1950. A Danish sculptor, Emil Jens Baumann Adolf Jerichau, left an indelible mark on the art world with his works of enduring beauty and emotional depth. Born on April 17, 1816, he belonged to a generation that followed closely in the footsteps of Bertel Thorvaldsen, under whom he briefly worked in Rome, but gradually broke free from the static Neoclassicism that had been passed down to him, embracing instead a more dynamic and realistic style. As a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and its director from 1857 to 1863, Jerichau played a pivotal role in shaping the artistic landscape of Denmark.
