The Skellerup Dolmen
sketchfab
The Knebel Bro Dolmen or Thorup Nord-dolmen stands as a sturdy freestanding monument of polygonal shape. Dating back to the Neolithic era, approximately 3,400 BC, it rises from the landscape at Knebel Bro on Mols in Jutland's eastern region, Denmark. From this vantage point, one can take in the expansive view of the Bay of Aarhus. According to Google Earth coordinates, its location is 56°11'54''N, 10°28'13''E. The dolmen's interior features five closely aligned orthostats that form a compact chamber. Measuring 2 meters by 1.85 meters in floor dimensions and standing at a height of 1.2 meters, the chamber space is modest yet defined. Above this enclosed area rests a distinctive capstone measuring 2.8 meters in length, 2 meters in width, and a substantial 1.5 meters thick. This imposing stone weighs around 8 tons and serves as a prominent architectural feature. A narrow opening, approximately 0.5 meters wide, is situated between two of the orthostats, allowing for some natural light to enter from the east. Originally, the dolmen was surrounded by a circular arrangement of kerbstones that added to its overall presence. Today, this historic site is safeguarded under Denmark's Heritage Law, restricting public access but ensuring its visibility from the nearby road.
