The T-80, a third-generation main battle tank (MBT) developed in the Soviet Union as an advancement of the T-64, entered service in 1976. It was the first production tank to utilize a gas turbine engine for propulsion. Manufactured in Omsk, Russia, the T-80U variant marks the last production model; however, the T-80UD and advanced T-84 variants continue production in Ukraine. Countries such as Belarus, Cyprus, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Russia, South Korea, and Ukraine operate the T-80 and its derivatives. Notably, Russian engineer Nikolay Popov served as the chief designer for this tank. Subsequent to the T-80 is the T-90, also known as "Proriv" or "Breach," which externally resembles the T-80 but boasts updated internal components.
