The Royal Game of Ur

The Royal Game of Ur, or Game of Twenty Squares, is an ancient game with two boards discovered in Iraq's Royal Tombs of Ur by Sir Leonard Woolley in the 1920s. These boards date back to the First Dynasty of Ur before 2600 BC, making it one of the oldest examples of board gaming equipment. Although Senet boards found in Egyptian graves predate it by nearly a millennium, the Ur-style Twenty Squares gameboard was also known as Asseb in Egypt and was discovered in Pharaoh Tutankhamen's tomb. A partially preserved tablet provided insight into the gameplay, allowing modern players to enjoy the Royal Game of Ur after over 2000 years. However, reconstructions of its detailed rules have varied widely.
