The iconic "Rock" at Michigan State University, situated near the north bank of the Red Cedar River off Farm Lane, holds a significant place within the university's cultural heritage. Serving as a dynamic billboard, students actively utilize the Rock to promote events, raise awareness about social issues, participate in thought-provoking discussions, and engage in various other forms of expression. Originally discovered at the intersection of Grand River Avenue and Michigan Avenue in East Lansing in 1873, the Rock was presented as the first official class gift by the graduating class of that year. Initially placed near Beaumont Tower within the Sacred Space, it bore an inscription reading "Class '73," although this message has since been obscured beneath multiple layers of paint. Contrary to its current upright position, the Rock initially lay flat on the ground and gained popularity as a romantic spot where couples could propose, earning it the nickname "Engagement Rock." In 1985, the Rock was relocated to its present location, where it has evolved into an open forum for students to express themselves freely.
