The "Revolver"... easy to print but challenging to solve!

thingiverse

The "Revolver" is a 3D printed puzzle with 41 independent moving parts that revolve and slide around a two-part Retainer. All prints are easy and straightforward, resulting in an impressive outcome. This puzzle shares similarities with a Rubik's cube as players aim to align matching colors, but it offers a unique twist: the ability to group rows or columns of the same color. A single or dual-color version is available for those who want this challenge without using six filament colors. This alternative features six indented shapes to align instead of colors. Files are available at http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1347886. One space is left for the Sliders to move one space at a time, requiring players to plan their moves strategically towards their goal. If frustrated, players can pull it apart and realign it or glue the thread so it will never come undone. The parts are easy prints with straightforward assembly, but players need at least six colors of filament. Black is used for the Retainer, while Revolvers are printed in White, and Sliders use White, Red, Yellow, Blue, Orange, and Green. To minimize visibility, players should leave one Slider out to create a space, and make all Revolvers the same color as that missing Slider. Achieving the end result takes time but is well worth the effort. Most machines capable of printing fine detail and good slicing apps can handle the print's fine tolerances. Watching it come together is satisfying, but once completed, players may find it frustrating until they solve it again, at which point it becomes very satisfying. Print the puzzle to test your skills and see if you can do it! If successful, post images of your accomplishment. Printer Settings: Brand: MakerBot Model: MakerBot Replicator 2 Rafts: Yes Supports: No Resolution: 0.20mm / Standard Infill: 3 Shells / 35% Infill Notes: Easy prints, but the Retainer file needs to be printed with 3 shells and 35% infill for it to be strong enough when screwed together. Other parts can be printed with 2 shells and 20% infill as they don't require great strength. Post-Printing: Assembly required... Remove the Raft then assemble the Sliders into the Revolvers, ensuring they move freely and smoothly. One Revolver needs to have only five of six spaces filled to allow for movement. Once assembled, place them onto the long part of the Retainer and screw in the second part with the thread protruding. Make it finger-tight as you may need to unscrew it later if you can't solve it. You can glue the thread so it will never come undone if you're up for the challenge. Quick Tip: As one Slider needs to be left out, make all Revolvers the same color as that missing Slider to minimize visibility in the empty space.
