A high-quality microphone, commonly known as a mic or Mike, converts sound into an electrical signal. It is used extensively in various fields including telephones, hearing aids, public address systems for concerts and public events, movie production, live and recorded audio engineering, voice recordings, computers for voice recognition and VoIP. Different types of microphones are employed to convert air pressure variations into an electrical signal. The most commonly used include dynamic microphones which utilize a wire coil suspended in a magnetic field; condenser microphones which use the vibrating diaphragm as a capacitor plate; and piezoelectric microphones which utilize a crystal of piezoelectric material. Most microphones require connection to a preamplifier before signal can be recorded or reproduced.
