The Rape of Europa
myminifactory
The abduction of Europa is a timeless theme in global art. The legend is rooted in Ancient Greek mythology, where Europa is the daughter of Phoenician king Agenor. Zeus, disguised as a majestic bull, takes possession of beautiful Europa. The artwork is inspired by the artist's visit to Greece. Serov draws inspiration from Cretan-Mycenaean monuments, incorporating a bull-headed vessel from Knossos' smaller palace and fresco paintings featuring flying fish from Knossos Palace on Crete. He contrasts the classical image of antiquity with archaic Antiquity. A unique twist is evident in Serov's interpretation: the powerful bull unexpectedly turns back against its will, revealing an underestimated strength in Europa. In stark contrast to frightened heroines found in traditional artworks, Serov's Europa exudes confidence and composure.
