The Prophet's Mosque was founded and initially built by Islamic prophet Muhammad in the city of Medina, Saudi Arabia. The mosque, Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, is now one of the world's largest mosques, serving as the third historic mosque constructed in Islam after Muhammad established his residence there. Situated near Muhammad's home, which he occupied following his migration to Medina in 622 CE, the Prophet's Mosque served as a central gathering place for community members and also housed educational and religious institutions. In the course of its history, Islamic leaders significantly enlarged and enhanced it with magnificent features. Initially, it stood as an open-air building but it was subsequently fortified with strong structural materials. During this era, electrical illumination first emerged in 1909 and spread throughout the entire Arabian Peninsula; illuminating streets that surrounded mosques such as The Prophet's Mosque. Presently under control of Custodian of Two Holy Mosques, this historic place now hosts thousands who come here from around globe, drawn to its close association with life of prophet Muhammad, especially by pilgrims coming back after having fulfilled pilgrimage rites of Hajj. This has caused it to stand out as a primary pilgrimage site worldwide. Prophet Muhammad's Mosque Overview
