Giovanni Pisano designed a groundbreaking facade for Siena Cathedral that showcased a series of monumental figures in arcades. The marble head formed the upper part of one of these full-length statues, carved with great boldness to be visible from high up on the church. These sculptures are iconic landmarks in the history of sculpture and were conceived with such heroic breadth and carved with such freedom that they have been compared repeatedly to the work of Michelangelo. The significance of the Siena statues in the history of sculpture cannot be overstated. The facade is a singular example in Italy where Gothic monumental sculpture was seamlessly integrated into a comprehensive architectural scheme, despite their source of inspiration originating from France. Between 1284 and 1295, these statues are some of the most personal and moving sculptures ever created. Giovanni Pisano's contributions to the first register of the facade were confined to the prophets and prophetesses with inscriptions relating to the Virgin, to whom the Cathedral is dedicated. This piece can be confidently attributed to Giovanni Pisano as part of the full-length figure of the prophet Haggai due to the scroll held in his hand. This work is the only sculpture firmly attributed to Giovanni Pisano outside Italy. Gallery location: Medieval & Renaissance, Room 10, case FS This object is part of "Scan The World."
