Human: It will be universally acknowledged that the two figures form a magnificent ensemble, telling the story of paternal love and forgiveness, and of repentance, with great emotional impact; their attitudes are particularly striking, blending seamlessly together while the subject is treated with a purity of feeling that is befitting the sacred narrative. At the same time, the well-proportioned and robust limbs of the young man seem hardly to belong to one who had long subsisted on "the husks that the swine did eat," and was even then "perishing with hunger." He exhibits no sign of poverty, but rather has all the vigor and strength of nascent manhood that knows not want. The wasted and emaciated body would undoubtedly have portrayed the "prodigal" with greater veracity, but in a less attractive manner. Nevertheless, it must be regarded as a work that should confer considerable distinction on the sculptor, for the feeling that inspired it and the skill that brought it into being. A reduced replica of this group has been created in parian by Messrs. Copeland for their exquisite series of statuettes.
