The earliest known version of this emoji was released as part of the initial 90 emojis designed for Japan's J-Phone in 1997, when mobile communication began to take off. By 1998 or possibly 1999, several prominent Japanese telecommunications companies – NTT DoCoMo, au, and SoftBank Mobile – started implementing their unique emojis according to exclusive technical requirements.
